Ceiling Motifs

Story 1

We began the survey upon arriving in town, starting with the stone tower that stands at its center.

It rises to roughly twenty meters. The interior consists of three levels, arranged around an open central shaft.

Tall bookcases stand pressed together along the walls. The air is thick with the smell of mold and dust. Aside from a few desks and chairs, there is little else. The structure seems to serve, in its entirety, as a vast bookshelf

At this point, a question emerged. Compared to the tower’s exterior height, the distance from the floor to the ceiling of the top level is too low. Even allowing for generous estimation, it does not reach fifteen meters. It is difficult to regard this as a simple error in design. Structurally, it is more natural to assume the presence of another space above the ceiling.

The investigation is currently focused on that ceiling, where various motifs have been painted. There is a persistent sense that something is concealed there.

Hint:

Try grouping the motifs into categories.

Answer:

Divide the motifs into animals and plants. A rule appears in the placement of the animals. Only one section breaks this rule: the area marked with the red frame below.

— Addendum —

Using the fixed ladder and the bookcases, the anomalous area was examined. Only that section showed a faint instability. Considered alongside the discrepancy in height, it is likely that this is an opening.

The surrounding area will be searched for a mechanism to open it.
